Elipsesjeff's Limit Texas Holdem Poker Guide

FlopTurnRiver.com started out as poker strategy site focused on the game of No Limit Texas Holdem poker. However, FTR has evolved to so much more, thanks to FTR Poker Forum members such as elipsesjeff, who contributed this write-up to FlopTurnRiver.com as a strategy guide for the game of Limit Texas Holdem poker. At FTR, we have both limit and no limit Texas Holdem poker players, and within those groups, we have poker players specializing in Texas Holdem tournaments and Texas Holdem ring games. While my own writings and discussions of Texas Holdem poker strategy focus on the no limit variation of Texas Holdem, FlopTurnRiver.com has just as many Limit Texas Holdem poker players and enthusiasts. elipsesjeff is one of our many strong Limit Texas Holdem poker players. elipsesjeff has been a member of the FTR Forum since July 13, 2004, and has contributed over 1,350 posts. A special thanks goes out to elipsesjeff for making FTR a more complete and informative Texas Holdem Poker site.

How did I get involved in Limit Texas Holdem poker? My story:

I played Tournament Poker, like many beginners, for the better part of 6 months. At first I lost money at , but I continued to play and after switching sites to Superior Poker, I made the money back that I lost.

I moved to and my poker tournament winnings were pretty good, 50% In The Money on my first batch of 50 $10+1 sit-n-go tournies. Then, over the course of two weeks (ironically the first 2 weeks of school), I went from $250 and just starting $20+2 tournaments, down to $50 and couldn't win a poker tournament for the life of me. I even played no limit Texas Holdem poker for a bit, but that about broke me even and I didn't like the risk factor. I decided I'm getting out of Empire with my last $50 while I still can and moved to to pick up Limit Texas Holdem poker.

Yes, I was under bankrolled. I didn't listen to anybody and thought I was the god of all poker, even with my measly stack of $50. I played $.25/.5 at Stars (like I said, severely under bankrolled) until I made enough to make the minimum deposit at and played $1/2 with only $90 (even worsely under bankrolled).

I built everything I have to today playing Limit Texas Holdem poker with $50, and thus, it has been the greatest investment I have ever made. Currently, as you all may or may not be aware, I decided to move up to $5/10 at Limit Texas Holdem poker. To those of you who don't know me, $5/10 is huge for me, especially since I was playing $1/2 until middle December, less than 1.5 months ago. I treat poker with the utmost respect, and try to treat all poker players with respect as well.

My next goal is to instill hope in poker players that they can play with the big boys. Hypermegachi asked me yesterday if I could ever see him playing at the $15/30 poker tables. YES, YOU CAN! You'll never get there unless you know you can. What's stopping you? Experience? Bankroll? Both can be gathered over time.

I think all players today on FTR can make a difference. I can sure tell you I never thought I would be playing $5/10 when 5 months ago I was playing $.25/.5 (and neither would Fnord).

Limit Texas HoldEm poker (LHE) is a strategic game, with everything focused in the 'Long Run.' Limit Texas Holdem poker can be just as profitable as No Limit and doesn't require as much risk. No Limit Texas Holdem poker (NL) has the ability to win a lot of money in a shorter amount of time, however there is always the chance to lose your entire stack on any one hand. You cannot buy people off of pots in Limit Texas Holdem poker as you can in No Limit; you must play strategically and always pay attention to what hands can beat you. The implied odds in No Limit Texas Holdem poker are much greater than those in Limit Holdem, you can make a mistake and still be able to recover. Emotionally, Limit Texas Holdem is a much easier game than No Limit Holdem; strategically, No Limit Holdem poker is easier.

Some No Limit Texas Holdem poker players proclaim Limit Holdem as a tedious, 'grinding' game. In this manner, Limit Holdem is no more different than No Limit Holdem. In Limit Holdem and No Limit Holdem, you still play the same hands, incorporate odds in your play and rely on reads in your playing decisions. It is true that a bad read in No Limit Holdem will harm you more than in Limit Holdem, but, continuous bad reads by a Limit Texas Holdem player can cost you just as much.

Limit Texas Holdem poker is probably the safest game to play long term, in that correct play will win you money.

I in no way promise any results from using this poker strategy guide. If you play solid poker you will be a winning player.
