Poker Software & Table Selection

The first key to being successful in online Limit HoldEm (LHE) full ring games (10 players) is where you decide to play at. Holdem players just starting out in Limit can lose a lot of money if they don't choose the online poker site that fits them perfectly.

First off, DON'T go to Party Poker to start playing LHE. My advice, start out at and take advantage of their lucrative bonus offer. One of the nicest things about LHE is that no matter what your Bankroll (BR) is, there is always a game for you. The rule of thumb is to have 300 Big Bets (BB) of the level you would like to play at. A big bet is equal to 2 big blinds, the amount that is bet on the turn and river. So, if you have $50, you should be playing at the $.05/.10 games or lower; at Party Poker, you are forced to play $.5/1 and you are playing well outside your BR. Ideally you should start with $150, I'll explain why later.

Another reason to skip Party Poker is because you will miss out on their bonus offerings. Ideally, you want to deposit at when you have a BR high enough to clear the entire bonus (this would require a $500 deposit).

Finding a good table to play at is also important to doing well. You do not want to be at a table full of Tight-Aggressives or Rocks, these players will outplay you and take your money. Find the tables with many Loose-Passives (Fish). Things to look for: Number of players calling the flop and the amount of raising preflop. You want to able to see the flop for cheap, and you also want a lot of callers. Generally, in the low-limit games, particularly microlimits, you need not worry about this because every table is really loose. Once you increase limits, you need to apply this strategy more.
